From Empty Unit to Fully Operational Swimming Pool in Five Weeks

When Billie’s Fins set out to create a new swimming facility in Peterborough, Pool Tech Services was brought in to deliver the complete pool build.
The Project
Billie’s Fins provides swimming lessons for all ages and abilities, from babies taking their first steps into the water through to adult swimmers, alongside general swimming, ladies only swimming, private lessons and pool parties. Its new Bretton facility expanded that offering with a changing village, café and studio.
For Pool Tech, the brief was much bigger than simply installing the plant. We were responsible for the complete pool build, including the pool shell itself, pipework, filtration, chemical dosing and the full plant room installation.
Starting with an empty industrial unit, the brief was to create an 18m x 6m swimming pool and all the infrastructure needed to keep it running safely and efficiently – with the entire project delivered in just five weeks.

The Challenge
Fitting a pool of this size into an existing industrial unit meant space had to be carefully considered from the outset. Alongside the pool itself, we needed to accommodate the pipework, filtration, chemical dosing and a complete plant room designed in line with PWTAG guidance, while coordinating our work with the builders, carpenters and other trades on site.
It was a tight programme too, so good planning and communication between everyone involved were essential.

The Solution
Pool Tech was responsible for the complete pool installation. The 18m x 6m pool was constructed using 2m x 1m fibreglass panels assembled on site, before our team installed the pipework, pumps, filtration and chemical dosing systems and connected the pool to the air source heat pumps.
Remote monitoring was also incorporated into the chemical dosing system, giving access to key operational information including chlorine levels, pH and pool temperature.
From initial costings and design through to installation and final commissioning, we managed the technical elements of the project through to completion.

The Result
Five weeks after work began, Billie’s Fins had a new, fully operational swimming pool ready to welcome its first swimmers.
It was a fast-paced build with plenty to coordinate along the way, but seeing the finished pool up and running brought a real sense of achievement for everyone involved.

James Hadley, Commercial Director at Pool Tech Services, said:
“This was a big project and one we’re really proud of. There were challenges along the way, but everyone pulled together, worked through them and kept the end goal in sight. Seeing the finished pool full of water and being used exactly as it was intended made all the hard work worthwhile.”
And for Billie Whyatt, Founder of Billie’s Fins, having the right team alongside her throughout the build made all the difference…
“We are extremely grateful to Danny, James and the whole team. It has been a real relief to finally find an honest, reliable and knowledgeable company that takes pride in delivering work to such a high standard. We would like to thank the Pool Tech team for all their support before, during and after the build.”
This was a proper team effort from start to finish. James Hadley looked after the initial costings and design, with Danny Grant managing the project and James Porter leading things on site, supported by Tom Brookes and the wider Pool Tech team. Once everything was in place, Matt Davies took care of the final commissioning and got the pool ready to go.
Five weeks is a tight turnaround for a project of this scale, so everyone had to work together, adapt when needed and keep things moving, which is exactly what the team did.
Ongoing Support
Our involvement hasn’t stopped now the pool is open. We will continue to support Billie’s Fins throughout the initial 12-month defect period, providing ongoing training and technical support and keeping a close eye on how the systems are performing.
Beyond that, we fully intend to continue supporting the site through an ongoing maintenance contract, helping to keep the pool and plant running exactly as they should for years to come.

From initial design and installation through to ongoing maintenance and support, Pool Tech is here for the long term.
